Dance, it’s fight against everything that is holding….

– Jean-Louis Barrault

A Core-Awakening Sun Salutation for Lower Back Support

http://www.yogajournal.com/slideshow/core-awakening-sun-salutation-for-lower-back/

A Core-Awakening Sun Salutation for Lower Back Support

Start to ease lower-back pain and counteract the effects of all that sitting by swapping some of your standard Surya Namaskars for this core-strengthening and -stretching flow.

These days it seems like almost everyone suffers from some form of low back pain or discomfort from too much sitting. Core strength is crucial to help support your lower back and improve posture and balance, not to mention deepen your practice and prepare you for more challenging inversions.

Inspired by Surya Namaskar B, this core-focused sun salutation is my go-to solution for developing long-term strength in the major and minor abdominal muscles and releasing the psoas. Since when these primary hip flexors are tight, they can also pull on our lower back.

Much like traditional Sun Salutes, you’ll still enjoy the fluidity of moving meditation with this practice while challenging yourself in a few fun new ways, too.

  • Mountain Pose

    Mountain Pose

    Tadasana

Set an intention, even if it’s as simple as remembering to send your breath all the way into your belly—activating the Sacral and Solar Plexus chakras—as a reminder to keep the abdominal wall engaged throughout the practice.

Relax your feet into the floor and soften your knees as you curl your tailbone down and away from you. Feel a sense of rootedness from the waist down and a lifting out of the torso as you draw the navel in. Soften your shoulders and lift your heart naturally as you bow your chin to your chest.

  • Standing Backbend

    Standing Backbend

    Anuvittasana

With that same sense of grounding yourself from the waist down, inhale to send the arms overhead, palms pressed, with your gaze at the tips of your thumbs. Keep your abdominals engaged as you lift your heart to bend your upper back slightly, let your head drop just enough to open up your throat. Keep reaching the tips of your fingers toward the sky to feel an ascension in your torso.

  • Forward Fold

    Forward Fold

    Uttanasana

Exhale to hinge at your waist and bow forward. Allow a microbend in your knees and draw the navel in toward the back of your spine as you tilt your pelvic bowl upward. Let the crown of your head hang heavy and shoulders release. Feel a sense of activation as you press the tips of all 10 fingers into the floor to send your seat even higher. Hang out here for a few breaths to allow the hamstrings to lengthen and release.

  • Half Lift

    Half Lift

    Ardha Uttanasana

Inhale for a half lift with a flat back to prepare, much like you would in a traditional Sun Salutation. Reach the crown of your head forward and send your gaze long in front of you. Continue drawing your navel inward and keep your shoulders soft.

  • Revolved Crescent Lunge

    Revolved Crescent Lunge

Exhale to step the ball of your left foot long behind you, keeping your back heel lifted, as you windmill the arms open to the right, palms face out. Hug the outer hips to the midline to help ease this powerful twist. Draw your front knee forward to stack over your ankle and sink slightly in the hips to release the psoas on the left side, relieving any tension in the lumbar spine. Firm up your core to take some of the weight off your right quadriceps, to keep the low back protected, and help to steady your balance. Take a deep breath in, and then exhale to turn your gaze all the way over your right shoulder. Think about creating one long line of energy from the tip of your left middle finger, all the way out through your right, as you soften the shoulders down. Smile, and stay here for 3–5 breaths.

  • Crescent Lunge

    Crescent Lunge

On your next inhale, sweep both hands up overhead with your palms pressed and gaze back at the tips of your thumbs. Much like in your Standing Backbend, feel a grounding sensation from the waist down as you lift your torso. Press down into the big toe mounds of both feet and firm up your back leg. Continue sending your breath into your belly to draw the navel in, lifting your belly off the front thigh to create more space. With your core engaged, test your balance by dropping your head back slightly, keeping your drishti (gaze) soft and focused overhead. Stay for 3–5 deep belly breaths.

  • Downward Dog Split

    Downward Dog Split

    Eka Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana

On an exhale, frame your front foot and sweep it long behind you, extending your nice and spread yogi toes into a Downward Dog split. Optional: Bend your knee and open your hip for a breath or two. Release your heart behind you and keep your shoulders and neck soft. Take a deep breath in to prepare for what’s to come.

  • Knee-to-Nose Pose

    Knee-to-Nose Pose

Exhale, drawing your knee as close to your nose as you can get it, tucking in your chin and lifting the thigh closer to your heart. Keep your back leg charged and back heel lifted as you build heat in your abdominal wall. Let your fingers spread wide, palms pressing firmly into the floor to lift you up and out of your wrists.

Option: Return to Down Dog Split and then back to Knee-to-Nose up to 3 times.

  • Tripod Plank

    Tripod Plank

Now things are starting to get spicy! From Knee-to-Nose, inhale to send your right foot long behind you, staying in a Plank position. In your mind’s eye, try to bring your right heel in alignment with your right hip point. Keep lengthening through the crown of your head and send your gaze a foot or so in front of you, without lifting your head. Make sure your hips stay lifted—almost more than you think they need to be—to really fire up your core muscles. Continued engagement of your core will make this a lot easier on your wrists.

Option: Hold here for 3 deep breaths.

  • Tripod Chaturanga

    Tripod Chaturanga

When you are ready, exhale to lower yourself halfway down in one straight line, keeping your right foot lifted. Again, try to keep your right heel in alignment with your right hip point as you let your shoulders come just beyond your wrist creases. Keep your hips lifted as you lower, and try not to release yourself all the way down to the floor if you can. Instead, let the top of your right foot touch the floor and the top of your left foot will naturally follow.

  • Upward-Facing Dog Pose

    Upward-Facing Dog Pose

    Urdhva Mukha Svanasana

Inhale, nice and easy, to Upward-Facing Dog Pose. Keep your thighs stay activated and lifted as you root down through the tops of your feet. If there is any compression in your lower back, lower your hip points down to Cobra Pose instead. Roll your shoulders down your back and lift your heart and chin naturally. Gaze toward the sky and smile with relief as you find a wonderful release in your abdominal muscles from this counter-stretch. Take 1–3 deep breaths here to reset.

  • Downward-Facing Knees-to-Chest

    Downward-Facing Knees-to-Chest

    Adho Mukha Apanasana

Find a subtle re-engagement of your core on your next exhale and send your hips up and back like you would in Downward Dog, but bend your knees all the way in to your chest, almost as if you were going to lay your weary torso to rest right on top of your thighs. Gently shake your head out to ensure your neck is relaxed, as you continue extending your seat all the way toward the sky. Your gaze should be right at your ankles behind you.

Option: Exhale to gently press your thighbones back behind you to straighten your legs into Downward Dog. Then repeat, inhaling as you draw your thighs toward your chest, exhaling as you extend back into Downward Dog, up to 5 times.

  • Downward-Facing Dog Pose

    Downward-Facing Dog Pose

    Adho Mukha Svanasana

We’re now midway through the full cycle of this salutation, so give yourself 5 deep breaths in Downward Dog to rest. Pedal the feet out to release tension in your hamstrings and find a rooting in your palms by pressing into your index finger knuckles. Hug your armpits in toward your heart and soften your shoulders. You can disengage your abdominals while you rest, sending your inhales and exhales into the full expanses of your core.

Switch sides: From here, sweep your left foot to the sky and repeat steps 5 through 12 with your left foot in front. You’ll end up back in Downward Dog, at which point you’ll either step or float your feet forward.

To finish: Complete the full Salutation with a Half Lift to lengthen yourself out and decompress, before you rise back up to Mountain Pose.

Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find
If her daddy’s rich take her out for a meal
If her daddy’s poor just do what you feel
Speed along the lane
Do a ton or a ton an’ twenty-five
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good in a lay-by
We’re no threat, people
We’re not dirty, we’re not mean
We love everybody but we do as we please
When the weather’s fine
We go fishin’ or go swimmin’ in the sea
We’re always happy
Life’s for livin’ yeah, that’s our philosophy

《 Lesley Gore – It’s My Party 》

《 Lesley Gore – It’s My Party 》

It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Nobody knows where my Johnny has gone
But Judy left the same time
Why was he holding her hand
When he’s supposed to be mine
It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Playin’ my records, keep dancin’ all night
But leave me alone for a while
Till Johnny’s dancin’ with me
I’ve got no reason to smile
It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Judy and Johnny just walked through the door
Like a queen with her king
Oh what a birthday surprise
Judy’s wearin’ his ring
It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Oh it’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to

8 Myths That May Be Keeping You from Practicing Yoga

8 Myths That May Be Keeping You from Practicing Yoga

As yoga keeps growing, so do the misconceptions about it. Here, YJ LIVE! presenter Stephanie Snyder sets the record straight on 8 myths that may be getting between you and your yoga bliss.

The good news is that yoga has exploded in the US and Europe and more people than ever are dipping into the practice. The bad news is all the misinformation out there that can be at best confusing and at worst a big turnoff for some folks who would otherwise really love and benefit from the practice. Here are a few of my faves.

Myth 1: You’re not flexible enough to do yoga.

This is my all-time favorite myth and as a yoga teacher one that I hear often. Saying you are too stiff to do yoga is like saying you’re too sick to go to the doctor. Stiffness leads to lots of aches and pains. I’m not saying it will be easy, but I can promise that a healthy range of motion throughout the body will reduce your aches and pains today and down the road. Just keep your sense of humor handy.

See also Fascia: The Flexibility Factor You’re Probably Missing on the Mat

Myth 2: You need a certain diet, body type, outfit…

Nope, not at all. Yoga is inclusive and can meet you where you are—there are no prerequisites. A byproduct of yoga may be better physical, mental health and well-being, but I assure you that it is not required to start. I was a train wreck when I began yoga and over 20 years later I’m still at it (and hopefully less of a wreck). The best thing about yoga is that you can come as you are and let the practice tend to you in the most generous way.

Myth 3: Yoga is religious.

Yoga is not a religion. Yoga is a philosophy. Do some people engage in yoga religiously? Yep, but there is no dogma or required belief system in yoga. The philosophy is meant to engage you in asking important questions, gaining insight, and making your own informed choices.

See also Yoga As a Religion?

STEPHANIE SNYDER STANDING BACKBEND

Myth 4: Yoga is just for relaxing.

Yoga is an eight-fold path that actually requires a pretty disciplined effort. Relaxation and stress reduction is a wonderful byproduct of a focused practice whether that is asana (poses), pranayama (breath), or meditation.

Myth 5: Yoga is only for women.

When I first started teaching vinyasa yoga, it was about 20 percent men. These days most of my classes are closer to 40 percent men. I love the guy who comes into his first class a skeptic and leaves a sweaty, blissed-out convert. Yoga creates flexibility, builds strength and refines your ability to focus. Don’t take my word for it look at all of the male superstar athletes like Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, Ray Lewis, Victor Cruz and Kevin Love (just to name a few) touting its benefits.

See also Yoga for Men: Why More Guys Should Be Practicing Yoga

Myth 6: I’m too busy to do yoga.

Again the too-sick-to-go-the-doctor analogy applies, except maybe even more here. These days you can get very high-quality yoga online in formats that range from 15–90 minutes. You can do yoga in the comfort of your home through Yoga Journal’s online courses or other sites like YogaGlo.com and Gaia.com. Add in the efficiency of getting to check off all of these boxes: fitness, stress relief, and skillful focus all in one session. Try just 20 minutes a day and observe the return on that investment. I promise you will be pleasantly surprised.

Myth 7: I’m not young or fit enough to do yoga.

I know lots of folks who started practicing at 50 or over 60. It’s not only a great healthy choice but also provides community and positive social benefits that may surprise you. You are only as old as your thoughts—and yoga can positively affect those too, so get yourself into a class with a great teacher and have some fun.

Myth 8: I’m injured—I can’t do yoga.

Au contraire. I have had many students, who come to yoga while they’re recuperating from an injury and displaced from their regular form of exercise. Those who first try yoga as a means of rehab, typically stick with it because it not only helps them heal but can also help prevent future injury.

The Moscow House of Architect Alexey Ilyin

The Moscow House of Architect Alexey Ilyin

Architects: Alexey Ilyin
Location: Moscow, Russia
Year: 2015
Area: 2,260 ft²/ 210 m²
Description:

Outside of Moscow in the Pushkin locale Alexey Ilyin has constructed a private house for himself and his family. The cabin is made totally of wood, and the characteristic independence of this material got to be one of the key subjects of the outline.

The-Moscow-House-of-Architect-Alexey-Ilyin-01

The bungalow’s format is fit as a fiddle of a stretched rectangle, and the draftsman has put it across and amidst the rectangular plot, mishap from the wall at the base separation managed by principles. Thusly, the ten sections of land are outwardly part into two non commonly subordinate regions: a little front greenhouse and a yard in the back. Confronting the bungalow is a little visitor house and a clean device shed disguised by a wall.

The-Moscow-House-of-Architect-Alexey-Ilyin-02

The primary house has two stories, however from the dominant part of viewpoints this can’t be seen. This is because of the way that the greater part of the top-level regions are enlightened by bay windows, while the slant of the peak rooftop is insignificant. Under the shade on the fundamental veneer, the totally clear wooden surfaces are outwardly striking after entering the plot of area, and much all the more so from the road, making a sentiment a completely withdrawn volume.

The-Moscow-House-of-Architect-Alexey-Ilyin-03

Additionally amplifying this picture are the shades, which for all windows are produced using the same wood as the veneers, and painted in the same light dark shading. The screens cozily shut all openings. In such an encased structure the house would have resembled a flawless parallelepiped, notwithstanding the patios at both its closures and the profound square specialty of the principle enchant (the coated entryway likewise has shades).

The-Moscow-House-of-Architect-Alexey-Ilyin-04

The inside design of the house is worked along the convergence of two tomahawks: set longitudinally are the family room and studio, every confronting its own patio, and across is the passageway lobby and the staircase situated before it. Specifically inverse the front entryway the planner put a little window watching out into the patio nursery: even from the road this compelling review opening is obviously unmistakable.

The-Moscow-House-of-Architect-Alexey-Ilyin-05

The topics of a monochrome outline for the veneers and the openness/closeness was fastidiously created by Alexey Ilyin in every one of the insides of his home also. There is no bureau furniture, just implicit, serving as a visual continuation of the dividers. This system took into consideration the even very humble in size rooms to seem roomy, while underscoring to the best impact the measurements of the lounge and studio.

The-Moscow-House-of-Architect-Alexey-Ilyin-06

The designer himself concedes that the most troublesome part in the viable usage of this outline was joining the sheets of the dividers, floor, and roof without utilizing customary attaching corners which are regarded fundamental for moldings, boards and cornices of any wooden inside. In this house every single such intersection have been dealt with the utilization of uniquely arranged calculated bars. With respect to the inside’s palette, the completing in every one of the rooms is the same dim (just a couple shades lighter than the one utilized for the exteriors), filling in as an immaculate setting for the uncommon hued accents, for example, the orange lounge chair or the yellow window box.

Blue moon, moon, moon, moon, moon
Di, Di, Di, Di, Di, moon, moon, moon, blue moon
Di, Di, Di, Di,Di

Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for do wah wah wah

And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper, “Please adore me”
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhh

Blue Moon, now I’m no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhh

《 The Shirelles – Will U Still Love Me Tomorrow 》

《 The Shirelles – Will U Still Love Me Tomorrow 》

Tonight you’re mine, completely
You give your love so sweetly
Tonight the light of love is in your eyes
But will you love me tomorrow
Is this a lasting treasure
Or just a moment’s pleasure
Can I believe the magic in your sighs
Will you still love me tomorrow
Tonight with words unspoken
You say that I’m the only one
But will my heart be broken
When the night meets the morning sun
I’d like to know that your love
Is a love I can be sure of
So tell me now and I won’t ask again
Will you still love me tomorrow

《 Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound Of Silence 》

《 Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound Of Silence 》

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
“Fools” said I
“You do not know, silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence

《 The Animals – The House Of The Rising Sun 》

《 The Animals – The House Of The Rising Sun 》

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I’m one

1

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin’ man
Down in New Orleans
Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he’s satisfied
Is when he’s on a drunk
Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun
Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I’m goin’ back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain
Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I’m one

《 Terry Jacks – Seasons In The Sun 》

《 Terry Jacks – Seasons In The Sun  》

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We’ve known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we’ve climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABC’s
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees
Goodbye my friend it’s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I’ll be there
We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time
Goodbye Papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along
Goodbye Papa it’s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them, I’ll be there
We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons have all gone
We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons have all gone

《 Ben E. King – Stand By Me 》

《 Ben E. King – Stand By Me 》

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No I won’t be afraid, no I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

1

So darlin’, darlin’, stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me

1

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry, no I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
And darlin’, darlin’, stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand now by me, stand by me, stand by me-e, yeah

1

And darlin’, darlin’, stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh, stand now by me, stand by me, stand by me-e, yeah

1

Whenever you’re in trouble won’t you stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me
